Thankyou so much for the advice. Well I'm going to order 40 live elodea off ebay soon as i can get them at a cheap price, i need 30 for the tropical tank and 10 for my coldwater tank.
The filter i ordered came today, the hang on the back filter, and its amazing! Works so well and the goldfish loved it for the 10 minutes they had it! Now have packaged it back up and it's been added wuth the other fish equipment. Also got a bottle of Tetra Aqua Easy balance stuff with it.
Hopefully if i order the elodea is shoul last without proper lighting!
I'm very excited, just 10 days!
Think I know excactly what to do now, just need to get the plants and the airstone and thats it, bring on the tank! smile

Hi Jasmine,

Did I miss something? Tropical tank? I thought you were going to set up the new tank for goldfish and that was that! Haha a victim of MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome) already !! I wonder how many tanks you'll have running in 6 months from now.

Seriously, in a warm water tank there's a lot more plants you could be putting in, some grow very easily - amazon swords, java fern and Cryptocoryne are good examples. Did you decide to go tropical on the big tank that you don't know you're getting yet?

BTW did you know that if you buy plants from a shop there's normally about 4 plants in the bundle - just in case you order 40 and end up with 160

No! Haha, should of made it clearer, I already have a tropical tank a 20g, for female bettas and have had it for a few months now. But the lights in it broke so ordered some new ones and they onyl came today, so i need plants for that tank too!
I'd never do that to the goldfish, they deserve the tank!

aha, I see - you're already a MTS victim. Any more tanks that you've not been telling us about?

Yes! When I move out thats it, my tank addiction starts! But will obviously make sure i have a good job first to pay for the tanks and the fish food etc!
I might put the new filter (hang on filter) in my tropical betta tank so it's also cycling at the same time with the other cycled filter, can't put it in the goldfish box as it has an open and shut weird lid lol!

Sounds to me like the addiction has well and truly started already!

Have you been, or are you thinking about, breeding the bettas? Good way of making a little more pocket money to feed back into the hobby if you can get good at it.

Well I was going to seen as I have 8 beautiful girls and a gorgeous male but it'd sort of be for my benefit, not the best itnerest of the fish. As i'd need another tank (a growout tank for the babeis) i'd need all the live frshly hatched food , find people to sell them too, and it's mainly the tank, i havent got a spare and aint allowed anymore.
I guess i'm happy that I'm allowed 3!
Would of loved to breed them.

Got another fish and cannot wait to add them all to the new tank.
On thursday daytime mum said she'll take me to pets at home for the plants i'm getting. Think i'll get some tough low light plants even though the tank has 2 x 28w bulbs! smile

It sounds to me like you have a bad case of "fishtankitus"
We all have had it, sometimes it clears up by its self, otherwise it will be a permanent condition  and will cost you a lot of money

Well my nephew started off with a goldfish in a bowl arghhhh then realised that was a bad and soon got a small tank which was small but better than the bowl. He experienced a rather steep learning curve but the fish survived and is still alive.
A few months ago he got a Rio 125 like yours Jasmine for said goldfish and got a mate for him. He was going to give the small tank away then after a little chat we had he dedided to keep it and go tropical. So I think he now has a tank with cardinal tetras in.
He is talking about maybe marine in the future, I think it was seeing all the lovely aquariums and set ups in the shop that set him off LOL

Forgot to say that elodea  grows like mad Jasmine. The fish will eat it and it is good for them. It is also very good for the water as it releases antibiotic like substance that prevents/kills blue/green algae. Also takes in lots of nitrAte and ammonia .
Also oxygenates the water.
Airstones tend to make some plants go brown. So unless you want it for the bubble effect, I wouldn;t put one in.

Plants need CO2 to thrive, which the air stone drives off.

I wouldn't worry about the airstone affecting Elodea, it's pretty robust stuff.
I've got airstones in all my tanks driving the UGFs and all my plants (including Elodea) are growing like crazy!

Don't use any liquid carbon products like easycarb or flourish excel with elodea as it will kill it.

Hi that was how i started - in the lounge actually, two goldfish in a tiny tank{ i cringe now when i think back}then they moved to a bigger tank in the shed and the tnak was replaced with a three foot tropical, then put a tank in me bedroom then another oh and another, then one in the dinning room,oh and then one in the garage oops the another in the dinning room - ended up with 7 tanks spread all around the house so had to upgrade the shedd and 'centralised' all the tanks - its so much better that way,but do miss the tank in the lounge. As for eloeda i can't grow it
Latest update 29/4/10 well only got four fish now - 2 syds and 2 B/Ns. All fish are equal.
