I have a planted tank with a soil based substrate topped by gravel. There is a heater cable fitted in the substrate.I find a lot of gas builds up in the substrate. It is odourless unlike hydrogen sulphide and doesn't seem to affect the health of the fish at all.I was just wondering what it was.

I got the same thing when I was using garden soil as a substrate (I don't do that now), and I guessed it was probably CO2, it never smelled like H2S which surprised me as the substrate would be almost certainly anaerobic underneath.
Garden shed full of tanks (tropicals) and a pond.

Without understanding, knowledge is worthless

Could be all sorts - as long as it doesn't smell and your tank parameters are stable I wouldn't worry about it. Changes in KH and pH are things to look out for. If they are stable then don't worry.

I shan't worry about it then.I had H2S in the tank a few years ago and you can't mistake the sulphur smell when the bubbles break the surface,so i know it can't be that. The tank is healthy enough so i'll leave it at that. Thanks for the advice.
