I recently bought Rena XP2 filter. It's supplied with some filter media & Bio -Chem Zorb. My question is: Do I have to put any more media in or leave it as it is? Also do i need to put the Zorb bag which is the activated carbon in or leave it out?

Thanks in advance smile

Hi there smile

I have two external Fluval filters & with mine, I use carbon, a Nitra-Zorb pillow & the weird looking ceramic things that the water filters thu & of course they both have sponges too.

You don't have to add the carbon or Nitra-Zorb, but I prefer to use them as they filter out the nasties.

I don't know if I have been able to help you tho, MrsM.

The smaller Fluval external filter (which I bought brand new) came with the sponges, charcoal & the ceramic media. I deceided to add the Nitra-Zorb to filter out excess nasties.

I'm afraid I can't comment on the larger Fluval external one, as it came with the tank set up I bought off E-Bay ;)

if this filter is going on to your juwel trigon tank i would personally just put biological media in your external and leave the chemical filtration upto the internal. Do away with the juwel carbon media and also one of the top blue sponges. buy yourself some clearwater and put that in the internal in the space you have made. Your external shouldn't need to be touched at all unless it gets a little clogged. Plus you have the benifit of the most relible filtration, biological.

i pay about £10 for a 5litre pack (the pack meant for ponds but same thing but cheaper). and that does 4 big tanks for 3 months. to use on your trigon you could buy one of those packs and it would easily last you a year if not longer.

It is basically a similar but alternative product to carbon. It works better and lasts 3 times longer.

Thanks Julie smile

I'm going to put Eheim substrate plus Cleanwater stuff in my external as Matt recommended smile

How often do you have to change Cleanwater stuff in your tank Julie?

We did the same thing with our Rena XP3 - the biochem-zorb is still in its wrapper. We can also confidently recommend Cleanwater, at least for occasional use.

They recommend roughly about every 2 months but it depends really.

I am wondering where you good people buy your Clearwater stuff from. I have found some on Aquatics Unlimited, as I am ordering some test strips from there & want to make use of the postage charge, but it comes in 2 pouch sizes - A50 or A100 & I'm not sure what size to buy for my Juwel 125 & Fluval 500. I have also fleetingly looked in 2 local fish shops & not found any - Any ideas anyone ?

Maidenhead Aquatics at Hare Hatch (between Maidenhead and Reading) stock it. Possibly other branches of MA to do - have you got one locally?
