Hi there,

I'm doing a project on the possibility of breeding a particular nudibranch species - Dendrodoris denisonii - and was hoping to get some feedback on a couple of aspects to the process.

1. How many holding tanks would be ideal taking into consideration the beginning number of individuals will be around 30 and at different stages of their lifecycles?

2. Do you think nudibranchs make popular aquarium pets?

3. What are some tricks of the trade in keeping healthy cold water marine tanks?

Thanks for your time.

Stephanie.

Hi Stephanie, Welcome to FC.

I don't know much about nudibranches but hopefully somebody will be able to answer your questions.

Hi Stephen,

I don't know much about them either, however I've seen the odd article about coldater marine keeping and it seems to be an untapped aspect of the hobby

The Coldwater tanks I've seen seem very straightforward and inexpensive compared to their tropical counterparts - I remember one edition of PFK where a young lad had set up one with UGF, substrate from the coast and used the water from there too...all the species were locally caught too.

I would love to see this aspect of the hobby rise as I think it would be far more fascinating than goldfish.

I hope you do take the project forward and keep us posted with loads of pics [Y]

Hi Stephanie and welcome to Fishcrazy! [wave]

I was also puzzled by your question about coldwater marine setups as this species would appear to be tropical. The following webpage describes mating behaviour of these beasts in a tank, perhaps you could contact the author directly for advice.

(You'll need to copy and paste into your browser, I still haven't worked out how to insert a link in this forum [crazy2] )

Incidentally I've often thought about keeping UK native marines in an aquarium - problem would be keeping the temperature low enough for most species but virtually anything that's normally found in rockpools in the litoral zone would be OK as they're adapted to withstand a huge range of temperatures, salinities and water quality in general. I'd imagine that otherwise the same rules would apply to keeping tropical marine aquaria (of which I know nothing btw).

Can I ask what your interest is in this species, is this maybe a PhD project you're starting off on? Sounds interesting!

Garden shed full of tanks (tropicals) and a pond.

Without understanding, knowledge is worthless

chillers are usually implemented into coldwater set ups to keep the temperatures stable as far as i am aware....however this in turn will push up the price of such a system.

i am assuming this set up would be on a system as oppsed to individul tanks.

in answer to question 2.........i would say no

Hey,

Thank you all for your replies, and yes, they are marine --- I simply posted this in the wrong place - didn't realise I was in the freshwater section!!

Sorry about that - I have moved the post to the right place (hopefully)!!!

Thanks

Stephanie
