happenings during may 06

may 06

arums have been flowering since  mid april
recieved some new azollah from sean, which has really taken off thankfully.
first marsh marigolds finally bloomed......never had them arrive this late before.
water hawthorn has been it's usual magnificent self, as many as 24 blooms at one stage.
the 2 umbrella's are bit dissapointing at the moment, showing signs of last winters frost damage, and definately not as splendid as they the should be.

later in the month, the irises bloomed, with my new variegated one showing a lovelely yellow bloom with the promise of more to come.

have just recieved some new marsh marigolds from jennyjane, and water soldiers from sean, both are in Q at the mo

big day in the garden.............hoovered the pond, potted up jennyjane's marsh marigolds and split & re-potted some water parsley, thinned the azolla, dead headed the the arums..............counted 15 blooms O0

no sign of sean's water soldiers, i assume they've sunk or been eaten Sad

noticed one lily pad on it's way up......................summat seriously wrong here, other folk's lillies are blooming..................great concern now about the 2 tropical lillies :-\

it's been about 5 weeks since i shut everything down, and i'm amazed at the way the pond has reacted. all water parameters are still spot on with the nitrates reading 5ppm and all else zero.
having to thin the azolla and hornwort almost daily, but the elodia appears to be slowing down a bit, there doesn't seem to be as much as there used to be.
parrots feather is running riot now, it's spread over about a third of the pond and looks lovely.
the irises have stopped flowering, but still look really healthy and throwing up plenty of lush leaves,  i'm having to dead head the arums every 2-3 days and still new blooms are coming up, both umbrella palms are looking as good as i've seen them, with plenty of new growth, water mimulus is a picture now, nice & tall with bright yellow flowers.
still no joy with the lilies though, apart from the fact that i now have 3 pads on the surface.

as for the fish, had a nice surprise last week when i saw 2 young golden rudd about 2-3 inches long, which was special because all the adults were taken by hagar. have also noticed that the 4 biggest "brownies" are finally turning gold, and look really attractive at the mo, they must be at least 4 years old and probably 6-7inches long.
all the other boys and girls are looking top notch, lovely colours, erect fins, bright eyes and nice & lively.

june seemed to start off with one disaster after another, but ended on a real high note, so i'm happy and contented at the moment

had another big thin out today, removed tons of parrot's feather, ..............1 &1/2 bin bags full, another load of hornwort, and of course the azolla. this stuff has been growing like crazy since i turned off the filters.

dead headed the arums again, and it looks as though they are finally coming to the end, still got 5 blooms, but no new buds on the way

tested the water and everything fine, but been a little concerned over oxygen levels in this humid heat...............no probs as yet, but can't help worrying a little.

fish are looking great, bright eyes, good colours and really lively and feeding well

had another big sort out today, once again, loads of hornwort, parrots feather and azolla went on the compost heap, hoovered the pond thoroughly and shifted out tons of silt, must be because the filters are off.

lifted the water hawthorn and trimmed it back, repotted it and put it back.

saw signs of yellowing on the arum leaves...............last flower died off a few days ago, but everything else is still growing like mad

fish are looking superb, got several brownies now turning gold at last, and the young rudd are still thriving

pond temps have been in the mid 20's for some time now
