Is there any type of mastic or sealant that will be safe to a marine system i can use to seal a leak on the top of my filtration system as i cracked it trying to get the outlet house off, whoops
Hi, and welcome to the forum! :)
Yes, there are fish safe sealents, however, these usually have to be be bought from pet shops, the most usual one you will see is the Jewel one. :) Please use a fish safe sealent, as ordenary stuff contains anti fungal agents that are deadly to fish.
Ditto, just to add the anti gungal stuff leackes out over time in water.
So make sure if safe for fish or buy from a LFS.

Hi i'll second whats already been said but the problem i can see is that this sealent needs twenty four hours to cure before coming into contact with water?
So can anybody else suggest a quicker fix? or is the time frame aceptable?
so everyone claims..... Ive used "normal" for repairs without problems....& got discus & cory fry in one of the tanks now.
the real issue is the formulation...of the bonding compound, most are not designed for permanent immersion, or permanent load, use a 100% silicone formulation rather than one with added fillers ( used to bring the cost down)
that said I would avoid anything with microban in... i think, not tried it yet
If you can't be bothered to do it right, don't bother to do it at all
I have a window company and although i would not use a non aquatic sealent on my tanks it is a bit of an urban myth that the anti fungas will leak. With sealents it is more to do with the purpose i.e. how much strength is in the finished dry state.
The other thing is you can by aquairum safe sealent from most DIY stores or specialised glazing stores. i think it is coded 1081 but been along time since using it on my big tank so might be wrong. will be a third of the price that the aquatic stores sell it for!

Hi Craig1234 and welcome to FC
Nothing to add to the above debate on fillers/adhesives, but have you tried contacting the manufacturer or supplier to see if you can get a replacement part?
7 8 tanks (tropicals) , and a pond.Without understanding, knowledge is worthless
Thanks for all the advise
What about Gold label underwater sealer. There's one for ponds and one for aquariums
you could try Hodgsons Clear silicone sealent, bought from any good caravan or boat shop. it costs about £3.99 for a 310mm tube. is a high modulas sealent with no anti fungle additions. lol it even says aquarium safe on the tube. as always if you are unsure, pop to the LFS for your supplys, but the gear in this tube is every bit as good as the overprices stuff the LFS will have, so if you are confident in your requerements, dont waste money on the specialist stuff. as for drying, the majority of sealents state 48 hours. the reason for this is the that is how long it takes a 10mm square bead of silicone to cure. thinner strips will cure quicker. however anything thicker than 10mm will not cure, fully, "ever" ! as far as i can find, there are "none" not one, firm that makes silicone specifically for the aquarium trade, the stuff you buy there is the same as that the rest of us use, it just you pay 3-5 times the price for the "aquarium" branded stuff.
Things aren't often what they seem, just because i have claws don't make me a killer!!!!!
