but the other BGK, it has a large swelling on the anus part and I'm unsure what to do Sad It's still eating but obviously it's also swelling as it's not releasing, any idea's? I'm thinking about removing it to another tank then treating as all the other livestock are fine.

Everytime I look at it I feel like getting a pin to try and open it but I won't.

I will look on more dedicated knife fish sites but thought i'd ask here first anyway as i know some have/had knifefish before. This is a new one for me Sad

This is a new one on me too Richy. Have you tried the usual starve him, then feed him green foods thing?

There's only 3 gold panchax and 2 bgk's in the 4ft. I feed small amounts of flake daily and feed the bgk's every 2-3 days with bloodworm and sometimes brineshrimp. Once every week or 2 they get defrosted prawns. The small bgk does go for the flake but BR doesn't bother. So, no i haven't tried to starve it but will when i move it.

I'll have to test the water in the spare tank before moving it as it's been empty (stock wise) for about 2-3 weeks even though i've kept up the water changes.

In general, what could cause constipation in any fish??

Oh dear hope it's nothing more serious RichySad

Like in humans, constipation is usually to do with diet I supposeConfused

Not enough fibre, overfeeding, type of food....

I agree starve him once you have moved him and maybe try daphnia if he'll eat itSmile

tried to get a pic but couldn't but now she's in the other tank. I might be able to get a pic in that tomorrow. I'll also try the salts and see how it goes.

Cheers

Does she seem to be swimming OK?

The reason I ask is that I had a ghost carp with a similar swelling which must have been gas because it swam head-down and had to struggle to maintain depth. This sorted itself out but reccured several times.

7 8 tanks (tropicals) Big Smile, and a pond.

Without understanding, knowledge is worthless

Hi Gordon, yeah she swims fine, no problems at all except large stomach and swollen anal area. With it's bum under the chin it's hard to explain properly as to exactly what it looks like. I need a photo really. Sad

still haven't got a pic yet but she IS pooing but the swelling hasn't gone down. I'll monitor it over a few days but it seems weird.

Stupid thought but, i have a male and female but the info on breeding is scarce and i only know of one document but they don't give info away about how it occured. The swelling may be some kind of egg sack? it's just behind the anus. She is only about 6-7" long and he's about 11 1/2"long. Maybe, who knows lol

Probably is just a digestive issue but atleast she's passing anyway Smile

I've just read some comments on You Tube RichySmile

Theres' some vids of a ghost knife and one person asked another if their's often got a swollen abdomen. The other one said they hadn't noticed. The first person then said their's does when  he eats lots of meat.

I can't tell the poo end to the food end, so I've got a lot of learning to do.

Hope s/he gets well soon Yes
