Have now got the new Perc home. I ended up sending one of my guys to collect int he end as didn't have time to get down myself.

It is rather dirty to say the least and was wondering how best to clean it, its mainly salt creep and coraline! I have used vineger but didn't really do much! Any Ideas? Also it has come with the standard Halide and i am now thinking that i might be better to buy something different, been looking at these new LED lights which seem to be coming available, anyone tried them? whats people views on them? i think for the reletively expensive outlay they could be quite cost effective of the 10year life of the lights, apparenltly they only cost £7 year to run so £28 for the amount i would need and you would also save about £300 over 10years at least on replacement bulbs for halides not to mention the running costs and the cost of suplimentry t5s?

Thanks

Matt

Most people on reef sites are saying too expesive for what they are and untested - might not be the right sort of light for corals etc. Opinion seems to be - in the future it will be the way to go, but not quite ready yet.

However, i've yet to see someone actually try them!!

Have a look on a couple of reef sites mate, there are some mammoth threads re. LED's

There is a review of them in the latest PFK.  The review was postive, but noted in the long term tests, the corals were not over fond of the lighting.  Also said that you would need six units to replace a single halide (£600 outlay) making them very expensive.

The blue light is very good though - you could run halide for the primary light and then a blue LED for actinic.

You can remove the coraline with a razor blade. The led lights are £179 per pair and you would need at least 2 pairs so i would stick with the halide

It was like that when i got there

i used to have a "Hobby" algae magnet with blades on and it was great for removing stubborn marks. Obviously the tank empty right now so razorblade as Smarkam said. Definatley a product to think about for the future Smile

LED's, i'm sure I saw on a reef forum a sponsor selling these either "buy 2 get 1 half price" or "buy 2 get another half price" can't remember now.

If I had the money and was tempted I'd try them on a planted trop tank but not sure about a reef just yet unless there's PROVEN data.
