Since the failing of the UV section of filter, the pond has slowly got greener and greener. I finally got round to ordering a new bulb and I just hope it solves the problem. I'm using a basket/floss filter and Barley Straw but it's not helping.

How long has it been without a UV tube?
There's no substitute for a duff UV tube, barley straw will take about 3-4 weeks min to even start doing anything, if it does at all. My advice is to get one spare and replace round about early spring, depending on weather conditions, change so much these days who knows what weather we'll get. Be prepared next year and have a spare.
Oh dear. Hope you can get it cleared soon Craig
use a flocculant (green water treatment) to help the UV.
this will clump the green water together which will be removed by the filter media.......................the UV will then keep the green water from reappearing

Good few weeks

Problem is I don't even know if the bulb is duff - the switch box keeps tripping out and I worked out it related to the filter so could be the bulb.

Barley straw has been in for a good few months. I replaced the old one around March time

Are standard Aquarium Green Water Treatments suitable or should I get a special pond one?
go for a pond one.
they are specifically designed for the job and larger volumes of water.
Hi Craig, how is the pea soup now?
All clearing I hope
Sadly not. Tried a green water treatment, twice so far over two weeks. It turns the pond brown instead of green but it just isn;t clearing. I'm waiting for Hozelock to come up with a solution with regard to the UVC but every time they send an email requesting information like serial numbers of the filter, I respond immediately and it takes another week before they respond. Not very happy right now - if I had the money, I'd scrap the whole thing and get a new filter. Very frustrated.
Oh dear
Have you tried phoning them as they aren't too forth coming with emails?

No, I have absolutely no faith in companies on the phone anymore.
Hope you get some luck with this mate.

is it a pressurised filter craig?
imustbedreamin: is it a pressurised filter craig?
Don't believe so - I think you'd call it a "gravity filter"? A box with plastic media topped with a sponge. Water pumps through a UV, sprays over the sponge and as it fills, flows from an outlet.
Good news is someone has contacted me and agreed to replace the UV part of the unit. Just need to work out what a "ballast" is - any takers?
