I'm not good at explaining things sometimes - i know what i mean but explaining it to others does my nut in(no chance of me being a teacher)!!

Good - thats what counts!
Keep us posted with what happens anyway mate
I know this is an old thread, but I thought it was worth while me posting an update.
It's been some time as I've been changing jobs and also that I wanted to see if I was getting consistent (Sp?) results.
The upshot of all this is that I've solved my problem...
I have gone R/O with all my tanks with amazing results, particularly with the Vision 180 which had all the algae problems.
In that specific tank, I emptied the entire tank, cleaned it with a mild bleach solution. I then ripped out the internal juwel filter as I was fed up with that. Basically it seemed that no matter how much I cleaned the filter there was always enough muck left to clag the water up as soon as I got the filter pump back on again. So, as I say I peeled the filter box off, replaced it with an Eheim 2213( I now have two of these - One the biological filter and one the 'scrubbing' filter with the carbon and Nitrate pouch), replanted the tank and refilled with R/O water.
I now have happy fish and a crystal clear tank. There are traces of algae, but I think I'll try a 50% water change once a month and see if that helps. The balancing of the GH/KH/PH isn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I am now a convert.
One thing I will say is that my advice to anyone starting with a planted tank is to go straight for one of the mineral subtrates with a gravel top. Previously I had just gravel and fertiliser tabs with indifferent results . Since changing to a mineral substrate things have been much more encouraging.
A big thumbs up to all who contributed to this thread previously. Cheers one and all,
Dave
Hi having missed this thread i cannot take any credit, but good to hear all you problems are sorted
Also thanks Deflep for updating this thread and saying how the problem was sorted
just one last request, any chance of a foto or two
I will attempt to do so in the next 24 hours. I work away all week now, so tomorrow is my last chance before next Friday. So, if there's no photos tomorrow it'll be next weekend.
Actually, I'm down in Newbury tomorrow night. It's a shame I'm on such a tight schedule or I'd see about nipping in to meet you ... as I said I would do donkey's ago. Where does all my time go I wonder...
Hi although not good timing at the mo,you are more than welcome to pop in for a chat and a 'tour' of the shed
Thanks Stingray, unfortunately I've only been at my new job 3 weeks and my weekends are turmoil at the moment (My new job is in Harlow), so I won't have time to visit.
I'll get in touch soon and we'll arrange a visit at your convenience and I'll take you for a beer afterwards.
Cheers mate,
