Most tvs are 'HD' ready now. But in order to recieve HD broadcasts, you also need an HD box like a sky HD box and subscribe to their HD service.
I've heard a lot recently about an HD set top box that will soon be available for a one off payment. Like the freeview set top boxes. Some free HD channels will be received by such a box with no monthly subscription.
True HD is at least 1080i/1080p. This means the lines in a picture are made up of 1080 lines rather than 576 in the usual type of screen.
This link explains things quite well I think http://www.hdtvorg.co.uk/guide/hdtv/introduction.htm
I've had a 42 inch Toshiba HDTV with SKYHD for a while now.
However, there just isn't enough content being shown in HD at the mo. If it wasn't that SKy Sports was available in HD I wouldn't bother.
You want HD as Lilac say's at 1080i/P not 720i/P. If you read the link Lilac added you'll see the difference between i and P. Basically, i gives you a better picture quality, but P is better when movement (like Sports) is involved.
Second, if you are looking at a package, DO NOT get a HD DVD. That's High Defn not Hard Disk. Some players have a hard disk in to record onto (like in a Sky HD/Sky+ box). Anyway, the HD format DVD player has been pretty much killed off and I can see the electrical shops trying to sell them off cheap. You want either Blu Ray (disks are expensive) or an upscalling DVD, which scales up your current DVDs to almost HD format.
Now this isn't as good as a Blu Ray disk player, BUT it's a lot cheaper (mine cost me £65 AND it plays multi-region) and you won't have to replace all your DVDs. I remember watching Return of the SIth for the first time and drooling uncontrollably. Though that might have been the drugs
Of course the Japanese are working on a Super HD format now....
"My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives." "God darnit, Mr. Lamarr, you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore."
Stupid TV's, who actually cares about the quality. As long as it ain't Black and White I'm happy.

Deflep... definately the drugs making you drool LOL
When I bought a new tv for the bedroom a couple of years ago, I got an integrated digital one (IDTV), but I chose not to get HD ready at that time because hardly anything was being broadcast in HD and I'd need the sky HD box etc. And it isn't the main TV anyway. Although I watch it more than the other one as I am in bed early.
Drooling watching ROTS. I was drooling watching The Phantom Menace.................................as I slept.
