LOL..............sorry mate, I mean leave it out in the utility room, no outside. :p

fraid I'm guilty of keeping my RO unit & Hma unit in the outside loo. I have made a cover for the wintertime thats fits over them to keep out the frost and as yet no mishaps. I am in the process of drilling some holes through to the brick shed which is next to the loo so that I can keep the units in there and still feed from the mains pipe keeping evrything well lagged. That way I can house them in an insulated DIY cupboard.
FILTER ISSUES - I PRESUME I CAN USE THE EXTERNAL TO GET THINGS GOING AND THEN BIN IT OR ADD THE PHOSPAHTE REMOVER ETC ETC ONCE THE LIVE ROCK IS IN.
HAS ANYBODY ANY OPINIONS ON WHICH (BRAND) OF SALT TO ADD?
Hi,
Your live rock is your filtration, put that in with the flow and cycle it. Use your external for live rock rubble and/or chemical filtration. Bio filtration like bio balls or ceramics etc will only give you nitrate spikes and issues. I am now in the process of slowly removing my bio balls and it is having a dramatic effect on nitrates.
Salt wise - i personally use reef crystals, from what i understand they are genually regarded as a good salt for reef tanks due to the makeup of trace elements and nutriants. If fish only then i am sure you could use many brands.
Matt
I used Instant Ocean but changed to Reef Crystals as the different batches of IO used to vary a lot plus some of the corals I added later on were a bit more demanding on the minerals.
reef crystals here.
one of the best ones...........a little low on magnesium i found but better than most others.
Yep, Reef Crystals myself too.
Up here they're usually around the most expensive and although I've got the "These new ones are blah de blah de blah" I just keep using the RC. Why change if I have no problems?
HAVING READ LOADS MORE STUFF I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT A SUMP. MOST OPINIONS SEEM TO BE THAT EVEN A SMALL SUMP IS BETTER THAN NOTHING AND I MAY BE ABLE TO OVER COME THE SPACE ISSUE AND THE INQUISITIVE 2 YEAR OLD. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH DRILLING THE TANK BUT I'M A TAD CONFUSED ABOUT WHICH PIPES TO USE, WHERE TO GET THEM AND HOW TO PLAN AND BUILD A BASIC SUMP.
ANY VIEWS APPRECIATED.
