hi, does anyone know much about treating discus? if so please can you let me know what i can do for my discus, tank specs are 110g 6.9ph, 0 amonia, nitrites and nitrate, the largest most dominant discus in the tank a 4 year old blue turq became dark and listing at funny angles and the gills look shrunken and moving fast, eyes have clouded a bit and there is some mucus on the skin, i added some discus from chens discus about a month ago, and everything was fine, in fact the day before this happened two of the new ones spawned in the tank, ive been treating the tank with esha exit for 3 days now but there doesnt seem to be any improvement, how long does it normally take to make a difference, should i consider using something else?
thanks for any advice
james

hi james,
so you have mixed fish from different sources yes?
how long has this fish been off.....?
after a month I would think it unlikely it is as a result of mixing fiah form different sources, but if it has been ongoing then it is a possibility.
Pics would be useful
If you can't be bothered to do it right, don't bother to do it at all
i agree mike very unlikely but you never know.
if i recall it is usually a very quick affair (i have never had to endure it so i have never seen it in the flesh)
i had a customer in today who bought 2 fish from me to add to his existing tank 3 or 4 weeks ago.
they have suddenly stopped eating and are at the back of the tank but remain in good colour....................this has been going on 3 day........all others fine..........................my advice.........waterchange plenty first.
he wanted wormer.............................waterchange first me thinks lol.
always.... water, water, water
hi guys, thanks for replies, im pretty sure that its not related to the introduction of the new fish, too much time has elapsed i think but i could be wrong, the fish seemed to improve slightly but has gone back to how it was, im pretty sure im going to loose it over the next few days unless i can think of something else, ill do another water change tommorow now ive run the course of exit, and try sterazin or similar as it may be gill flukes or something parasitic, then im out of ideas, im hoping it will get better over the next few days as im off on hols for 11 days on monday, and the person house sitting has no fish experience, any suggestions?
how often do you change water and in what quantity. how is it prepared and stored?
hi i do a weekly change of around 40% sometimes higher, i use tapwater preheated to temp, ive had discus spawn previously so they must be happy with it, the fish in question doesnt seem to have improved at all although it is now at the front of the tank rather than the back, ive done another water change today not sure what else to try
sorry for the late reply.
how is the fish now.
is the fish still eating?
My first intial thought is to up the water changes, daily if possible cleaning the substrate as you go.
if the fish is still eating this is a good sign. I personally would add vitamins to its food but others would disagree.
did the fish start to go downhill after a waterchange?
hi, unfortunately even though the fish got its colour back a bit and it was at the front it was still upside down on occasion i found it dead yesterday morning, one of the eyes looked bloodshot so im not sure what could have happened, the best fish in the tank gone with no warning, i dont think it was to do with water changes but then i could be wrong, any suggestions? also im looking for a good all round parasitic control thats safe for shrimps and snails?
thanks
my initial thoughts on the symptoms is water quality.
unfortunatly using water straight from the tap is always a bit risky in my opinion as you have no control over how much chlorine etc is in there.
running it through a hma or cbr filter is always a good idea.
you say the fish was upside down but in your original post you say it was listing.
did the fish have a swelling in the abdominal area?
was it struggling to maintain its balance?
