There you go Dommo I resized them. If once you have inserted the image in the post you right click on the image, choose image properties you can then resize in the boxes that appear. I changed the width to 600 and it auto constrained the height to 450. Hope that makes sense! Smile

nice photos dom, that pond is certainly worth  looking after, although i have to say that now i've seen it, i'm not sure that you have a serious problem, green water is not attractive to look at, but the fish actually like it, as apart from a rich supply of "greens" it gives them added security.

i think i would give it a large (50%) water change, put in some oxygenators to absorb nitrates and starve the algea, a few more marginals to take away the  starkness of the concrete walls, & see how it goes from there.

re, the water change, if you can't get a pump to the pond, how about talking to the guys at the students union, and asking for volounteers on a sat afternoon, with a few tinnies  afterwards............and as a bonus maybe they'll grow to respect stuff a bit moreWink

it's my union flag and i want it back

That pond looks really nice, and worth looking after. I don't know if your uni has any grounds people, but it may be worth asking them to see if you can work with them to improve the pond.

As for ideas, I agree with Ed, some reeds or iris around the edge and some oxygenators to help starve out the algea, and you'll be sorted. Although, if you do starve out the algea, you probably will have to begin feeding the fish during the spring and summer, as there won't be the invertebrates in the pond for them to feed off, as nice as a crystal clear pond looks, they're not natural.

Dommo - I am no pondie, but that one cries out to helped!

Does the uni have any courses which may include looking after the pond (landscaping, animal husbandry etc)?

Failing that, do they have a Community Liaison Group or charity committee? Basically anybody who could donate time or money to stop it going to ruin.

What a marvellous opportunity for the uni!

Best wishes

Again, the geography department may be able to help with labour as this would make a fantastic project. Learning the ins and outs of a man made micro system inc nitro cycle as well as the wildlife aspect as Nicola pointed out.

Needs loads more plants and the water sorting out . Indeed would be a great project for studentsSmile
