DILEMA with all fish

Have got an 60 litre tank and its currently has one plec common plec one rasbora one male siamese one female siamese 3 cichlids not sure if there afrcian  or not 2 are blue with black stripes one is orange with faint stripes one catfish small catfish.

Now  problem is the cichlids they just cant live in harmony atall.   When all three ofthem are in the tank which there not now due to quarantined one of them they chase like wildfire and nip the siamese.    They play dead and one of them dominates and is the bullie.  The two blue ones are in there and one is tiny other big the bigger the bullie.   The orange one is on her own.

Am sick of this every time tend to buy fish they are alway fight or chase or just kill each other off.   Realise cichlids are species only but they are becoming so much that the other fish are just retreating now and becoming recluse.

Cant put them all together or they just chase and squabble.   Just like the angel fish beautiful fish butas soon as introduced it with community tank guppies platies etc it become abullie and provoked the others.

All want is a simple harmony tank where they all can swim freely if get ridof cichlids what should be getting bearing in mind want to keep siamese rasbora and bottom feeders.  Will gouramis and discus be good idea.

I'm not sure if you where the same person asking about ID the fish in Cichlid section, but mixing these fish will lead to trouble.

And just so that you don't think your the only one that's done it, I first did this when I started keeping African Cichlids (Malawi's) and stuck them in with Clown Loaches, Mollies, Tiger Barbs and a Siamese Fighter.

It looked all dandy at first, then the SF was stripped and died, however I actually had a accident which killed all the fish bar my Molly and Plec.

Being a fan of Malawi's I have to say that I personally would never mix again, regardless of the size of the tank there are too many issues with mixing these fish i.e. diet, aggression, water parameters.

It's also a very small tank for those occupants.

As I am always saying, I would never keep bettas in a community tank.

It's best to have two or even three females bettas to a male too otherwise the male will pester the poor female to deathSad

Gouramis and bettas are not a good mix either as they are of the same family (anabantoid) and tend to be agressive to each other.

Malawi cichlids are best kept to a species tank as Frank has suggested. He knows as he has kept themYes

They prefer rocky setups and bettas need plenty of plant coverage and places to hideSmile

Discus are another species of fish that are best kept to a species tank as they have special requirements including tip top water conditions. So not for the community tank.

Also common plecs grow very big so I'm afraid you'll have to think about rehousing himYes

It seems such a shame that LFS sell them without confirming the size of tank it will be living in. Alas your tank  is way too small bobthedogSad

Right so what should have then if the cichlids go.

Realise the tank isnt big but all the tanks at the pet shop are this big.

So cichlids gone left are one rasbora one males fighter one female siamese fighter that never appears  one plec and one catfish small.

Need to get some ideas for fish that are compatable with this lot excluding cichlids thanks

With male bettas you have to avoid anything with long wavytails like male guppies, the finn action will cause aggresion in the betta, avoid fast nippy fish such as tetras and barbs and danios, gouramis love to chase bettas. Anything too small such as neons will be a snack, anything larger than the betta being shy and slow will become stressed. Best fish to get are swords, mollys and platies any young they produce will be a welcome snack and keep your numbers under control. di

yea i know, its a generalisation, i kept coldwater and tropicals together too with no problems for quite a while, then one day ................ some bettas will tollerate some fish and not others but it general its best not to push the limits too much.... just asking for trouble. di
