I currently have a 300 litre tank that I have been running for about four years.  It is a majority Cichlid tank.  The Chiclids consists of Protomelas taeniolatus (Red Empress) and Labidochromis caeruleus (Electric Yellow).  I consider I must be doing something right as they are breeding like crazy.  I am about to purchase a 1300 litre tank.  I would like to keep it as a Cichlid, preferablly Lake Malwali, only tank.  I think I would like to add some Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos (maingano), if they are compatible.  But after this I am stuck.  Does anyone have any ideas for further additions to this collection?  Your assistance would be most appreciated.

Thankyou for your assistance. I have another question. If I stock both the yellows and the Red tops, won't they inter breed?

Not as far as i know, but i guess they may try if you only have one of each and they happen to be male and female.

1300L, sounds a biggie.

It's obviously your choice what to put in it and Malawi is as good as any choice I could make.

Personally I think a Mbuna only set-up would be great, but not sure if your looking at them alone or looking for Haps or a mix.

Only thing with mixing is such things as dietary issues, aggression issues but it is a helluva big tank.

In a tank that size aggression should be too much to worry about, the Melanochromis group are dubbed as nasties but you could get away with them in there.  Personally I think the Johanni are beautiful and far nicer than Maingano, I have kept both and never had a problem with them whatsoever.

There could be issues with inter-breeding, but I never had problems with my Labs (Hongis and Caereleus).

You have a broad spectrum of fish that you can look at, it's also your choice with regards to which Malawi fish you actually want.

I'm presuming it's a tank well in excess of 6 foot so the world is your oyster from what I can see. Smile

I have picked up my new tank.  It is 1500 litres.  It is approximately 8ft x 2 1/2 ft x 2 1/2 ft.  I have decided to go with:

Yellows, Red Empress, Rusty, Acei, Johanni, Dwarf Auratus.  I believe this should be a good pick to begin with.

Thanks again for you advice.
