Hi best idea is to get rocks from your local fish shop as you know these will be safe for your fish
You can buy rocks from a garden centre much cheaper but you need to know if they will be safe for your fish
I have heard of people getting stones from river beds etc but the problem with this is you don't know what chemicals/pesticides have been used in feilds etc nearby and what has leeched into the river. I'm NOT saying don't buy from an LFS because it will cost money but it is a sure bet they'll be fine unlike collecting elsewhere.
they shouldnt be very much at all, especially considering what it may cost to replace the stock if you do happen to get dodgy stone
I personally like Slate in tanks, all most always looks stunning imo! :)
Slate's about as cheap as it comes, too. It'd be a good idea to get some putty as well, two part epoxy stuff, you'll also be able to get it from your lfs but cheaper from a hardware store I've found. You don't want any bigger rocks taking a tumble one day!
As said, Slate is nice, I personally like Grotto Rock (type of Lava) but some may think it is a bit abrasive. Also River Cobbles are another favourite.

The only thing i would add is that stick to one type of rock as mixing too many types looks 'untidy'? IMO
Slate is good, also usefull for hiding filters etc
If stacking rocks up start with the largest on the base getting smaller as they get higher and if pos most fishkeepers 'stick' them together- i tend not too as i am always moving the decor around
