    Poorly Clown fish: urgent.

    (posting on behalf of wayne).

One of our clown fish has developed a white mark next to but not connected to its dorsel fin. It was just like a scratch (as if it had caught itself on something), but today it has spread across both sides, almost like a sadle, but not very dense. I'm assuming it is fungal :( but what can we use to treat it, that won't harm the corals and other inverts we have in there. We don't have a hospital tank, tho LFS said we could just get a small tank, add tank water, heater and pump, and treat any fish for a couple of days no probs (this was prior to getting the fish and after my question about not having room for a third tank).

Anyway, is melfix okay? And if it is, would plain ordinary Tea Tree work? I know that Tee tree has anti fungal properties, and that it is the main ingredient in melafix , so was wondering that since we can't get to the LFS tonight if it is safe to use?

    many thanks

    Nicky

Is there any chance you can get a picture of the fish? In saltwater, it's unlikely to be a fungal infectionm as there are very few fungi that can tolerate the salt. It could however be a bacterial infection, but I wouldn't like to say with out seeing the fish first.

Will try to get a picture but my camera is not good enough to get a close enough picture in focus I think.

    Cool.

To answer your other questions, yes, you can use tea tree oil, but, it needs to be emulsified in water first, which usually involves shaking it very well in a bottle. I wouldn't use it in the tank with your corals though. Methylin blue is also a good all round treatment, but, I definately wouldn't use it in your tank.  If you don't have the space for a hospital tank, you can just use a bucket filled with tank water with a heater in it and an air stone.

It could be a bacterial infection. I'd get him out of the tank and  treat him with the tea tree oil in a bucket.

How long should it be left in the bucket for?

Hi good luck with getting it sorted, all i can remember about marine clowns is that they are hard too treat because of the protective coating they have to protect them against the anemone stings!

A freshwater bath may just be the thing. Put him in the bucket in fresh water for 3 minuates or so, but watch very closely for signs of stress. He won't like it, but if he stops breathing or goes belly up, whip him out.

How safe is a freshwater bath? Sounds risky...  Is it supposed to kill the bacteria?

James - It's Wayne again now!  Hope you and Phil are doing okay!!

    Nicky again>

Fresh water bath done. Didn't seem terribly bothered by it, though he was a bit disorientated when he went back into the aquarium. He doesn't seem too impressed tho, and is not displaying his dorsel. He is pecking at the other clown tho, so is still dominant. The white mrks are still there, any ideas as to how quickly they go? At the moment he is lurking at the front of the tank, he has had a bite to eat (fed the sun coral), so is still eating.
Have phoned the vets and waitng the the exotic specialist to call back so I can get some metronidazole for the tank. Will also try to pop out to the LSF to buy a small tank suitable as a quarantene.

    Re: Poorly Clown fish: urgent.

A quick update - the clown fish is looking much healthier - the white marks are almost completely gone.  It was upset by the freshwater bath, and for a day or so afterwards whenever Nicky looked for it in the tank it would hide in the rock... but it didn't hide from me lol!!  It still swims away from her.  Never known a fish to bear a grudge!

Keeping our fingers crossed that it is on the mend!
