Hi, I have a pair of Kribs in a 2ft (56 litre) tank all to themselves!
I have added half a clay pot and the male has spent alot of time in here, he's even built up the gravel to restrict the access from the front. The female flits in and out quite regularly but the male spends about 80% of his time in the pot.
Is this normal behaviour as I thought it was the female that would be more likely to disappear but she is extremely active around the tank, always around when food is given. Occasionally the male will appear for food but then straight back into hiding in the pot.
Can anyone shed any light on whether this is normal? Both Kribs seem to get on despite being a relatively new pair, so based on this I'm not concerned about fry as I know this can take time!
Cheers
Nick
Sounds like he's doing the equivalent of birds 'nest building' to me! With my pair (who have bred before) the male is always busy in and out of their cave and building little piles of sand in front of it.
Yeah could be right, I'm not overly concerned just wanted some reassurance I suppose lol.
I have had Kribs in the past that bred the once but all the fry got eaten by tank mates, hence they now have a tank to themselves although I gather it's common for the parents to eat the first batch anyway?
I'll try and get a pic added of the tank to assist.
Cheers for taking the time to post.
Hi,
My Original pair of kribs and indeed the ones i have now it was the female who has gone into the pot and done the digging out etc.. the onlt thing i have noticed is with this new male, he has spent a lot more time in the pot than the previous one, and also does quite a bit of digging the hole in the pot.
I Reckon he is just getting the house ready fer the mrs :)
Before ya know it you will hear the pitter patter of little fins lol soz :)
Got any pics of your Kribs?

No Fish or Equipment were hurt in the making of this post :)
That's cool then, I always thought it was the female doing the housework (no pun intended...lol).
I'll leave them be and see what happens!
No pics yet but I'll work on it.
Strange how things change....but since starting this thread the roles have been reversed! It's now the female that spends most of her time in the pot with the male keeping watch in or around the entrance, hopefully that's good news!!!CheersNick
Yeah that sounds right now lol
You should notice she spends a lot of time in there, and maybe not even coming out for a couple of days.. after 5-7 days you may see her start to appear more, then you may notice the littlens in the pot..
Sounds like they are ready tho :)
good luck :)
I am pleased to say that my Kribs now have about 20/25 fry, they appeared late last night!
Mother is shepherding them around whilst dad remains close to the spawning pot.
I will get some pics up as soon as I possibly can although my past experiences of fish pics aren't too great!
LOL...........yeah, my pics are horrific too.
Good news, hopefully you'll have a good little batch there.

Apologies for the lack of any updates but day by day the fry were reduced in number until none remained, lasting about 5 days in total.
I was gutted but positive in the sense that I was convinced that this was only the start of good things, true enough 5 days ago around 9 fry appeared again! Currently only 3 are left but hopefully they will survive.
I now know the tell tail signs of when the eggs are ready to hatch as the female gets particularly aggrssive with the male who despite this still stands his ground and patrols the flower pot entrance, what a guy.
Anyway I'll try and update in a couple of days.
Good luck.
