    Nano reef at 3 months

Here is a picture of my nano reef at 3 months it has gone well apart from the slight illness of the clown - which is better now.  Added a few more hermit crabs today.  I am still amazed at the diversity of life in there.  We found a small clam today on the rock!

In the short term just keep things going slowly.  There is a bit of cynobacteria on the sub coral.  The hermits are helping to keep it under control but I would like to eliminate it.  In terms of stocking I would like to add a couple more peppermint shrimp and some more corals - some mushrooms or xenia - maybe a finger leather or button polyps.  I will keep monitoring the water quality and as long as it remains stable I would like to add a third fish - a small goby or blenny, but not for a few more months,

We have already been talking of a bigger marine tank lol!!  Maybe even converting the freshwater one we currently have.

looking very nice Wayne, sun in a better position now, lots of nice algae growing on the LR. Colt looks lovely but might prefer more flow unless it's just the way you took the pic Smile It doesn't want to be blasted but nice gentle swaying Smile Glad the clown is recovering too Yes

The Colt coral does sway in the current - and has doubled in size since we bought it.  I will keep an eye on it though.  I am thinking of replacing the fluval with another Koralia nano for better flow.  I can always peg the rowaphos bag to the side of the tank with a lettuce peg!

The tank is an AquaOne AquaStart 500 (bowfront, 65L).

    Thanks,
    Wayne

    More questions mate (sorry)!

What have you added on top of the bog standard tank? -You mention the koralia, did you change/add anything else to the off the shelf set up?

    Cheers

    Hi Dave,

Yep - it has been customised quite a bit!  I have removed the lid/cover with the standard lighting (2x11w).  The tank is open top with an Arcadia Luminair with 4 x 24W T5 lights.  In the picture you can also see a Fluval 1 internal filter for rowaphos and the TMC V2Skim 120 nano skimmer.

    Take care,
    Wayne

Hi i always used my phosphate remover in a fluval I/F 1 but as you say the lack of power/current makes you wonder if your idea would be better?

    After all does the rowaphose need to water to be 'pushed' through it?or would as you have suggested in filter bags hanging in the tank be sufficent? {that is how i use my polyfilter}

As for your tropical tank,i think you would miss your beta, and shrimps? How about 'swapping' tanks?

Ps what salt mix do you use?

    Hi James,

I use Red Sea Coral Pro salt - mainly as it is the salt of choice at my LFS.

I would miss the betta and shrimps - would have to get a small desktop tank for them! ;-)
