I have a brand new tank (no 2) a Rekord 70 and i like the look oh cichlids,I live in a hard water area.
What would be a good starter fish and how many can I have in my tank,(I havent even taken it out of the box yet)
I want to get the correct gravel (looking at Black roman) and rocks etc so as much help as possible would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

The Rekord 70 is a small tank.  The other question is what type of Cichlid are you looking at?   The main issue will be size, I've only had experience with African cichlids (Malawi actually) which are too big for that tank, although there maybe other Cichlids from different places that may be able to live in a size of tank this size.

Yes, what cichlids are you looking to keep? Are you wanting to go for south american dwarfs (such as apisto's) or rift lake cihclids, such as tanganickan shell dwellers?

They grow to about 7" I'm sure, and will need a bigger tank than a Rekord 70 (I had one previously).  I'm pretty sure you'd need a tank of in excess of 200L to keep them.

They're South American, and tbh I don't have much knolwedge on them.

However I would say a big no.  Unless they where very small to start off with and move over to a bigger tank when it grows, however I have no knowledge of how quickly they grow though.

I'd say no to both firemouths and convicts, they both get large and need a much larger tank than 70L. If you're after somthing small and very cichlid like, how about a pair of dwarf acara (nannacara anomala)? They show a lot of the characteristics of the larger cichlids, but are more suited to your tank size. :)

kribs are ok with most substrate, the important parts are plants, wood and rocks (making up some caves)

Oh yeah, just beware, unless you bought the one with no hole at the bottom.

Think we need to get like those signs on tunnels etc where vehicles are given a height allowance, need one for our fish and the holes................hehe.
