Urgent Help

I noticed in Friday that all of the goldfish had what looked to me as Whitespot (had it a while back), anyway got the treatment in on Saturday, but since then it has seemed to get worse and one fish has died and now all the others are just at the bottom of the tank and only come up when I feed them.  They look now as if they have been dipped in sugar and also it seems like their tails are just wasting away.

I dont know what else to do and havent done a water change as I thought with the treatment in that I need to keep as much as the treatment in the tank as I can.  Also forgot my user name so this is why it's the late post.

I think we will lose then all, as they dont look well at all, so I guess all I can keep on doing is treatment and hope for the best, so I guess i'm asking is it whitespot as its the part of the tails seeming to be dropping off that has be as worried as the fish looking like ghosts.

 Are the goldfish in a tank?if so they may need some extra 'air' going in as its a little warm for them at the mo?

I would also add some aquarium tonic salt and treat with waterlifes protozin! I would do a third water change and do a good general syphon of the substrate and get as much muck out as possible then treat with the whitespot treatment {leave at least 24 hours before changing from one make to another treatment}

Sounds like you are having a bad time there safc

 Unfortunately some strains of whitespot can attack the fish internally before any outward signs appear which makes treatment less likely to succeed.

Sounds like there is some fin rot going on too, probably because the fish have become weakened by the initial disease

I agree about doing a water change and gravel hoover and adding salt.

Waterlife do a specific treatment for goldfish that is for  whitespot, velvet and fungus called Disease Right. But Protozin is also used and is very effect in most cases.

If you had tropical fish I'd suggest increasing the temp to 30, which does help, but I doubt your goldfish would thank you for it. I would guess that the temp is higher than it usually is though due to the warm weather. I know ours is.

Well thats it all are now dead.

So now i've already have a tropical tank, so I'm going down that route with the other tank as while it may sound callous but when a little tropical fish dies it does not effect you the way the goldfish do.

Anyway now what do I do as the tank is empty as i've said they have all died.  How much water changes and how long until I can start putting the tropical fish into this tank.  The current set up for this tank has been going for about year and half.

Poor little thinks and two of them were the orignal goldfish that we have had for over two years.

What kind of filter do you use in each tank?

If it were me i'd strip the tank down and give it a good clean with warm water and salts. Dump the gravel, media etc and start from new. If you can get some media and water from the existing trop tank that will help speed up the cycle alot.

Depends on what filters you have.

White vinegar is excellent for cleaning, then rinse well.

it's the filter that came with the Jewul Trigon that we have, any step by step guide would be great, if someone has the time.  Dont want to make any errors

is the juwel the trop tank which is setup now or the goldfish which you're going to clean?

What kind is the 2nd filter and which tank?

Coldwater tank, give it a good cleanout with one of the methods mentioned above. Make sure you get right inside the filter chamber aswell.

You could clean the sponges in boiling water but since the problems you've had it might be better just to replace them all. It's up to you

TROP tank, remove one of the bottom sponges and the filterwool and place in the COLDWATER filter to help seed the bacteria. Replace them with new media in the TROP tank.

Use water from a water change in the TROP tank then topup as normal (dechlorinated water). Make sure you have the substrate in and up to temp first before adding the media.

This should get everything going much quicker than a brand new setup. Just keep an eye on the water parameters over a week or so. Write the results down to keep a check on them and post here if you're not sure.

Well it's taken a bit time but the water and gravel are all out and the tank will be cleaned up later in the week.  New stuff on order so the question is now what type of fish to put in the tank.

The wife wants something different to the other tank, but not sure what.
