    Apple snail eggs

Hi my apple snail has laid some eggs in the hood of my tank, they were a pinky colour to start with and now they are pail pinky white colour. I just wondered how long until they hatched. The eggs started off jelly like then went hard, and now they have gone back to jelly.

    Thanks

    Re: Apple snail eggs

I don't know anything on snails unfortunately and don't want to say anything that might be totally wrong.

I'm sure fishy will be in soon and give a clearer picture as she has a lot of experience with them.

sounds like they had duds, they usually start of pink and get paler as the the snail grows as it eats all the insides the size of the snail breaks through the crust and they drop into the water, if this is the first clutch they tend to be generally unfertile watch out for more cluches though as they tend to lay 3 or 4 per season in batches and then none for ages. di

Thought that might have been the case, but didn't want to say.

also the clutch starts to pong real bad, most cluched had in 10 - 14 days come take a week or two longer depends on the temp, if its up by the lights then it gets pretty hot, so i would say 2 - 3 weeks then chuck it. di

I know there are loads, do you know if they all usually survive?

Thought about asking LFS if they will have them when they get bigger

yep most will survive and cos they constantly eat (algae, youll be glad to know) they do produce quite a bit of waste, my snail tank was like a cesspit i think the stock rate is one adult snail per 10 gals as a general rule. You should suppliment their diet with foods high in calcium for good snail growth add liquid calcium to the water (kents is good) and up your water changes esp as they begin to get bigger. di

Hi when i found my snail eggs they were all hard and dry, and after about 2 weeks they went quite jelly ish and then the snails hatched.

One of my snails also died a few days after i found the eggs, but the other one is still ok.

You could still get some eggs if the snail you have left is female, as they can store the sperm for quite a while (i think thats right)

    Hope that has helped :0)
