hiya dave, nice to a tropical wallah in here Big Smile

anyway mate, it's not a lot different to your tank, you need plenty of floating plants to cut down on the amount of light, plenty of submerged oxygen making plants like hornwort or elodia, to out compete the b/w, take care with feeding as you don't want extra nutients, and make sure there's no run off from the surrounding garden.

remember, b/w is really just an algea, so treat it the same way.

i should mention that you'll have to manually remove it to start with,...........just twirl a stick around it and pull it out.

oh, and  as someone once said .."we need pics"          2funny

Cant add much to edd's advice as the best approch.

How ever if the remove as much as possible and then use a treatment called "Blan-kil excell" this is not so much a chemical but a extract from barly straw.

It works great and dose the job but as the dead stuff decomposes it allow's a nother chance fro algae to take hold again.

As Edd says: plants & shade. Most of the shade in our small pond is provided by some tall reeds at the side, but also got a lily & floaters (lemna, water soldier & frogbit).

Additionally elodea & the marginals outcompete the bw for nutrients.

Would heartily reccommend frogbit (floater), only put some in a couple of months ago & spreading very nicely, small lily like leaves, lots of shade! Just buy a small bag & throw it in (take it out of the bag first!!).

You can buy various things to kill bw but if you don't address the cause then it will keep reappearing, so if you go down this route, would suggest getting some more plants as well as a longterm fix.

Cloverleaf Blanket answer it's biological so no chemicals and gets rid of blanket weed for months turns the water milky for a few days but when it clears most of the blanket weed will be dead or dying :)

yep, same advice dave, though i must admit, it doesn't look like much of a problem to me.there will always be a little on the waterfall, or the stream, but that is easily removed with a scrubbing brush, only takes a few minutes.

i thought you meant summat like ths2funny

not sure if this is correct, but i believe a flogulator can help prevent b/w taking a hold, but is no good once it is present in the pond Sad

in fact i'm not sure if flogulator is the right name for it 2funny

well, floculate is wot happens to single cell algea...........the stuff that turns water green..............u/v lamps floculate algea into clumps that can removed by the filter ( see craig's pea soup thread), but i'm not sure if it 's effective on established b/w Tongue Tied

I have had really bad blanket weed which I was only able to keep control of because my pond is so small.  Anyway I bought some cloverleaf and dosed 40ml (500ltr dose, which is size of my pond), it started to clear so a week later I doesed 40ml again and by the end of the second week it was 90% gone, after 3 weeks I had none and could see the pond liner and with a quick brush to get the dead stuff off it was looking like the day I put it in.

Can't recommend it enough, fish seemed happy with it, although it does say you need a well oxygenated pond, I raised my return pipe a few inches to add some depth to the air entering the water (no idea if this actually helped).  I have read people using it and not getting a single bit back 18 months later.

EDIT - I did have a blagdons electronic thing before which 'seemed' to control it to the sides but it broke.

120ltr Tank, 7 guppies, 6 harlequins, 5 panda corys, 5 endler guppies, 4 white cloud mountain minnows, 3 unknown tetra, 1 zebra danio, 2 black widows,2 pitbull plecs and snails

40ltr Tank, 1 S Fighter, 1 Adult platty & 5 young uns, 3 African Dwarf Frogs and snails

500ltr Pond, 3 Goldfish, 3 Golden Rudd

Thats a really nice pond Bluedave!

Would tend to agree with other posts that the BW doesnt really seem as bad as expected. Did you see the photos/vids of the algae in the Beijing yachting lake?

Also you will always get some bw on waterfalls, I find the easiest thing is to twizzle it around a stick every few days to stop it spreading into the pond.

Very minor point is that your inlaws could possibly do with a bit more surface cover, poss floaters. General rule of thumb is 1/3 to 1/2 of the pond surface should be shaded by plants. Having said that the pond does look v good so maybe dont need to bother?

 Cheers Bartolli,

they have been just scrubbing it every couple of weeks, they'll just have to continue doing that. They did have some more plants in there before but i think they lost/got rid of a few when they installed the safety cage.

Passed on the advice and we will see what happens next time we are up!
