Hiya,
I have a Hydor NRG CO2 system which I set up Monday evening. I hit problems when it told me to half fill the bubble counter as the water drained out of it.
All it said with regards to the position of the container is that it should be somewhere safe where it can't be knocked over so I had it on the floor at the back of the tank.
I have now put it on a table next to the tank which isn't very safe because it is easily knocked over when I take off the fish tank lid!
Also I can't see anything happening, although it doesn't say what should be happening!
So could anyone tell me whether the height of the container matters and what should be happening please as the instructions are so poor!!
Many thanks!!
You should see some bubbles in the bubble counter!
I've not specifically used the hydor one - so give me a minute and i'll go have a look at it
1xTrigon 1903 Clown Loaches,14 Cardinal Tetras,8 Rummynose Tetras,6 Cory Trileneatus,6 Hatchetfish,4 otocinclus,1 SAE,1 Bristlenose,, 10 amano Shrimp

12 litre tank - 4 japonica shrimp, 4 Red crystal shrimp, 5 High Spot Rasbora
Anubias Barteri, Glossostigma Elatanoides, Ammania Senegalisis, Limnophilia Sessiflora, Bacopa amplexicaulis
Thanks Bluedave,
There were some bubbles when I was messing about with the position of the container but I kept adding water to the bubble counter as it was draining away and then the container was too full so I had to empty a little from the container as I was worried it may explode or something!! No bubbles since.
Also I lowered my filter to reduce surface agitation but don't know if it's too low - I presume the fish will start to go to the surface if there's too little oxygen?
Can anyone give me any advice on this please?? I have bought nearly 25 plants and don't want them to die
I'm sorry I don't know more about these units. I'm sure someone will be on soon to advise.
I don't think your plants will die without the CO2 in the short term, as I understand it, they just won't grow very well.

Rena Aqualife 120 x 40- 250l :
Plants: Vallisneria spiralis ''Tiger'', Bacopa monnieri, Limnophila sessiliflora, Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis', Echinodorus 'rubin', Anubias barteri var. nana, Java Fern, Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green', Limnobium laevigatum
Fish:- 17 x Harlequin Rasboras, 3 x Bristlenose Plecs

I am not familier with this system, sorry! Your plants will be ok without CO2 short term, they grow better with it but wont die without it.
I dont know anyone who has used this moel so I cant really help any further, sorry!
Fishity fishity fish fish! ;D
Thanks Trea and Glub for your replies, it's nice to know that you would help if you could!
Im having similar issues getting my CO2 started. It is just starting to inject bubbles once every five minutes or so. I think it just takes a while for it to get going (Imustbedreamin was right )
Set it up as per instructions but you might have to wait a good few days before it does anything.
Thats the best I can advice I'm afraid
Thank you, I made up a DIY mix last night:
sugar up to the first mark on the bottle
1/2 teaspoon of bread yeast
warm water to the second mark
(don't need bicarb as have hard water)
it's working a treat!! Much cheaper too - 92p for 6 sachets of yeast from the Co-op!! LOL!!
I have some more questions about the change to water parameters but will post these on a new thread, thank you for your help
Sorry for not coming back to you Nat, I've not been back on for a few days (busy at work, busy at home - aaagh!), it sounds like you've sorted it though.
If your talking about the fermenting type of Hydor - i've had a look and they seem to be similar to the dennerle ones that I use - it takes 2-3 days for the fermenting mix to start producing the bubbles. The dennerle bottle should be placed next to the tank in a carboard box so as to benefit from the heat rom the tank (helps with fermentation apparently). i'd carry on with the DIY mix if I were you, although I do find that the 'off the shelf' fermenting kits tend to last longer and give a better more even CO2 distribution (but they are about 6 times the cost!).
When we had one of the hagen things I found it useless until I used a home mix of yeast and sugar
Have been using a Red sea one for ages now. I often feel it isn't quite enough for the tank though as I feel the plants should be better than they are. Especially at the moment. They were all looking great a few weeks ago
I think your tank is just about a bit too big for the DIY/fermentation kits Froggy.
How about using two?
I have wondered that Dave
Infact I have been thinking of trying something like the Tetraplant co2 optimat in addition to the fermenting thing I am using.
Either that or I just need to change the whole fert regime
Refresh my mind Dave......what is your regime?
Trigon - pressurised CO2 (Sera system), Dennerle ferts E15,V30, TR7 and S7
'ickle' Tank - Dennerle Bioline CO2, Dennerle A1 daily
I'm looking at changing the ferts regime myself and making my own from dry powders - will work out much cheaper in the long run I can 'customise' what i'm, adding to the tank.
I consider dry powders from time to time but never done it yet
Definately something going on with my plants. They have looked wonderful with less co2 than I think gets in there at the moment and on less ferts in the past
