i am looking for one decent size fish (maybe purchase it at about 5-6" and it gets to a max of 12-14" tops)
Will be in a 48x22x20 (300 litre) for the time being, no doubt to be upgraded at some point in next 6 months or so, if i keep the x4 Bichirs and x2 Reed Fish together which i want to do.
Current tank mates would be
x4 Senegal Bichir, currently 4"
x2 Reed Fish, currently 5"
x1 Syno, currently 4"
Was thinking about an Oscar, but is that risking too much, in terms of aggression with other tank mates? Was kinda hoping one Oscar would be cool with them, but i guess its a risk?
Any other suggestions?
A peaceful(ish) Cichlid (x1)? any suggestions
An oddball type?
Like i said, looking to purchase at the 5-6" mark, and have something that will reach no more than 12-14" at its fully grown size.
London tap-water, so alkaline and hard, sand substrate, mixture of bog wood and rocks for decor
x2 Eheim 2028 as filtration
hmmm, cant shift this name

Right up your street perhaps Alex, what about a flowerhorn? Spectacular fish to look at, and full of character. Not my cup of tea personally, but i know you like your parrots! Pic below is one of several flowerhorns belonging to a friend of mine.
I must ask, why are you looking for just one single fish? For the setup as it is at present I'd consider a pair of
Channa bleheri
. In fact I AM considering a pair of these for my 4-footer currently just occupied by my ornate bichir (the featherfin syno appears to have evaporated). A snakehead species that doesn't exceed 8 inches has got to be a contender for your tank, think about it mate.
BTW what's your syno?
7
8 tanks (tropicals)
, and a pond.
Without understanding, knowledge is worthless

I believe my Syno is a Synodontis Eupterus, but thats going from pics from Google, its the closest match i could find, as i am sure you can appreciate Syno's are not the easiest fish to catch on camera, if i get a decent chance i will take a pic and show you
I love the look of those Rainbow Snakeheads my son, gonna put them on my "to do" list
Now too sure about the flowerhorn, but i wouldnt rule it out.
Funny you should mention about the Parrots, i am really enjoying my Parrot set-up, but i read a post on another forum tonight that kind of threw me, i know some peeps really dont like them, but sometimes i read posts that make the Parrot sound like a cross between Jack The Ripper and the Devil himself.

Each to his own I say mate. Hybrids or GM fish have no appeal for me whatsoever but that's down to my own personal taste. I'm not going to start ranting that you or anybody else shouldn't keep them just cos I wouldn't. You're enjoying them, that's what counts.
Provided nobody goes and tips a load of them in the Amazon they're doing no harm.
Strange beast the flowerhorn, from what I can glean it's origin is a well kept secret, but it is believed to be a hybrid of two or more S. American cichlids and there are rumours that it is GM too. But I've read it can be bred and will breed true. The fish in the picture above rushes over when the owner walks in, takes food from her hand and will allow itself to be stroked. Awww...
Syno eupterus is the featherfin, same as my (ex?) syno.
Never seen the snakeheads in any lfs but gonna look out for them next time I'm in the far east.

well i ended up getting x3 Pink Tailed Chalceus, they are about 3" at the moment. Predators, but according to the research i have done on the internet, usually okay with fish over the size of 1-2"
Here's a pic i found on net
